By Jove! Netflix’s Enola Holmes is Coming Soon

Julie believes great books should be read more than once…
The first images from Netflix’s original film Enola Holmes dropped this morning, and by jove, I think they got it. And by “it,” I mean my devotion.

Starring the absolute perfection that is Millie Bobby Brown, Enola Holmes centers on the younger sister of the most famous literary detective of all time, Sherlock Holmes. But based on the film’s synopsis, Enola refuses to let her older brother have all the mystery solving fun:
England, 1884 – a world on the brink of change. On the morning of her 16th birthday, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) wakes to find that her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has disappeared, leaving behind an odd assortment of gifts but no apparent clue as to where she’s gone or why. After a free-spirited childhood, Enola suddenly finds herself under the care of her brothers Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin), both set on sending her away to a finishing school for “proper” young ladies. Refusing to follow their wishes, Enola escapes to search for her mother in London. But when her journey finds her entangled in a mystery surrounding a young runaway Lord (Louis Partridge), Enola becomes a super-sleuth in her own right, outwitting her famous brother as she unravels a conspiracy that threatens to set back the course of history.
Victorian England? A mysterious disappearance? Bucking the patriarchy? Helena Bonham Carter?
Enola Holmes, we’ve been waiting for you.
Based on the book series by Nancy Springer, the film gives audiences, especially our girls, a SHEro that refuses to just sit idly in the background. She’s headstrong, courageous, and refuses to let men dictate her path. Enola Holmes is essentially who I wanted to be as a teenager. Strike that. She’s who I’m trying to be now.

Of course the film also stars two of England’s most beautiful and well-coifed actors – Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin – and the queen of acting royalty – Helena Bonham Carter – but make no mistake about it: this is Millie Bobby Brown’s adventure. We’re just fortunate to be along for the ride.
Enola Holmes premieres September on Netflix.
